NEW ORLEANS — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved the first of its long-term NSAID-free combinations of Celebrex (celecoxib) and Vioxx (rofecoxib) for the treatment of arthritis pain.
The new combination is the first FDA-approved combination of two pain-relieving drugs for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
"Celebrex is indicated for the short-term treatment of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis," the agency said in a statement.
The FDA said Celebrex and Vioxx are now the first FDA-approved COX-2 inhibitors for the long-term treatment of arthritis pain.
"FDA continues to evaluate the long-term efficacy of Celebrex and Vioxx in reducing pain and improving quality of life," the FDA said in a press release.
In addition to the Celebrex and Vioxx combination, the agency also has the Osteoarthritis Drug and Bone Density Booster for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
The Osteoarthritis Drug and Bone Density Booster is approved for use in adults and children ages 6 years and older.
The Vioxx combination, which is FDA-approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis, has not been approved for use in children.
The new Osteoarthritis Drug and Bone Density Booster is being developed in collaboration with Pfizer Inc., a U. biotech company, in order to enhance the safety and effectiveness of these drugs.
The new Osteoarthritis Drug and Bone Density Booster is not currently being studied further for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis in the United States.
